A 17GB Claim, and a Lot of Pushback
A thread titled “Daniel Han of Unsloth validates Qwen3.8-27B will run only 17GB VRAM” pulled in a wide range of reactions on r/LocalLLaMA, starting with HollowVoices’ top-scoring reply: just an image captioned “Me at 16gb VRAM,” standing in for everyone one gigabyte short. From there the discussion split between speculation and skepticism.
Shoddy_Bed3240 floated the idea that this could mean the model uses quantization-aware training (QAT), comparing it to DeepSeek V4 Flash. rerri pushed back, arguing it’s more likely Daniel Han is “just speaking out of experience with previous versions of Qwen 3.x 27B” rather than sharing insider information, adding “I do hope I’m wrong though, QAT would be really badass.” AuspiciousApple asked, more pointedly, whether the previous-generation 27B model didn’t already run on 16GB cards too.
jacek2023 was blunter still: “I am confused how this is any news. New 27B is the same size as old 27B, you don’t need to ‘validate’ anything here.” rerri offered a technical reason why: “Probably no architectural changes and it’s identical in size to 3.5/3.6.” That claim itself got debated — Former-Ad-5757 argued a dot-version bump “usually… only means different posttraining, no new architecture,” while cakes_and_candles countered that 3.5 was “a huge arch upgrade from 3.” In a follow-up, jacek2023 noted that “over 300 users on r/LocalLLaMA upvoted the ’news’ that a 27B model can be quantized into a 17 GB GGUF,” and Dr_Allcome added that the post never actually addressed quality loss from quantization in the first place, calling the claim “a ‘water is wet’ statement.”
Running 27B Models on Constrained VRAM
Underneath the skepticism, several commenters shared concrete tactics for fitting a 27B-class model into limited VRAM.
mr_christer reported running the Qwen3.6 27B model on 16GB of VRAM by switching to text-only mode and skipping the vision component. When roworu asked how to strip vision from the model, Terrible-Detail-1364 pointed to the --no-mmproj llama.cpp flag. sine120 added that IQ3 quantization, with vision disabled and a small context window, ran decently on a 9070 XT.
laser50 described a middle ground: offloading the vision projector (mmproj) to RAM instead of dropping it entirely, using a hybrid Q8/F16 mmproj file of only about 700MB that “still works really well.” Separately, Trivikrama_0 recommended CPU offloading more generally, and in another comment noted that offloading roughly 30% of the model’s weights to RAM frees up VRAM for a larger context window, at the cost of slower inference. irreverend_god said putting the KV cache in RAM instead gave slightly better performance than offloading most of the model’s weights, while adding they weren’t fully sure of that comparison.
MoE as an Alternative to Dense 27B Models
For users with less VRAM to spare, overand pointed out that dense models like the 27B “will only run with decent performance if you can fit everything in VRAM,” and suggested mixture-of-experts models such as Qwen3.6-35B-A3B instead, where only the active-parameter count (the “3” in A3B) needs to fit in VRAM. 2Norn cautioned that context size and KV cache still push real-world VRAM needs up to around 20-22GB even in that case.
Does Quantization Get Harder as Models Improve?
ortegaalfredo raised a separate point about why VRAM requirements might not keep shrinking from one release to the next: as more training goes into newer models, the added entropy in the weights can make them quantize less cleanly, so a model that held up at Q4 previously might need Q6 in a newer version to preserve quality. That claim sits alongside Dr_Allcome’s broader complaint above — that the original post never addressed quantization quality at all, one way or the other.
